What all features are you looking for in a firewall? You mentioned speed is important: So something you might want to look over: The question is do you have the time/knowledge and desire to take it on and if all goes to shit what is your plan? Or is it possible for someone with mid level networking knowledge to repurpose an old dell poweredge as a firewall/router without putting themselves out of business.Īnd there are plenty of youtube videos out there around configuring pfsense Honestly that is gonna be a question you need to ask yourself if you want to take on the responsibility. Would it be I'll advised for an engineer to role play as a sysadmin for the sake of saving money or is pfsense to risky for someone without prior knowledge utilizing it as productivity throughput for their main source of income? My main question is basically, would it be I'll advised for an engineer to role play as a sysadmin for the sake of saving money or is pfsense to risky for someone without prior knowledge utilizing it as productivity throughput for their main source of income? Should I pay cisco? Or is it possible for someone with mid level networking knowledge to repurpose an old dell poweredge as a firewall/router without putting themselves out of business. My business is industrial/manufacturing and everything is controlled via 10gbe so while the network requirements are pretty demanding throughput wise.architecture and firewall wise they're pretty simple as everything will be wired and on site bar some minor vpn solely for nas access and VoIP.

Some background, I am familiar with basic networking and my required architecture, but am completely green to pfsense. Namely paying egregious amounts of money to cisco for an easy, stable network or creating my own, starting with pfsense. Hi, I recently started a small business and am weighing the networking alternatives for a network upgrade. Thanks for steering me in the right direction.

EDIT: thanks for all the replies, I didn't stop to think that maybe there's a middle ground between Cisco and diy.which I've realized I really don't have the knowledge to do this myself.
